Hello gents.  Welcome to our third installment of the whisky mini-series.  During the first two episodes, we enlightened you on what the prey looked like, then we went about listing out the critical tools needed to hunt… now we will show you how.  In case you’ve already had too many whisky glasses or been simply confused by our use of the word “prey”, we are, of course, still referring to whisky.

A Real Man Knows His Champagne

After telling you about a wine-of-the-week for the past six weeks, I’m back for an encore presentation on Champagne and sparkling wine.  (Side Bar/Wine Bar – just as not all that glitters is gold, not all that bubbles is Champagne.  Just like facial tissue vs. Kleenex, “sparkling wine” is the product category, while “Champagne” – i.e., sparkling wine from France’s Champagne region – is a brand name.)  Building some Champagne knowledge will do more to project an image of sophistication than donning a black tux/black tie combo.  Champagne symbolizes finesse, elegance and a connection to the finer things life has to offer.  So educating yourself on the basics will get you closer to the 007 zone than anything else you were going to do for the next five minutes.  Read on, gentlemen….

Welcome to the second of three MP posts on red wine.  The grape of the day?  Merlot, an international superstar winemaking grape varietal.  It’s used to produce wines made entirely of Merlot, and it’s also blended with other red grape varietals.  As discussed in more detail below, Merlot makes wines that range from having soft, fruity and lush characteristics to stiffer wines with more acidity.  It’s been one of the world’s most important and widely grown red grapes for centuries, and is cultivated successfully in many winemaking regions throughout the world.

Pinot Noir – Plentiful Possibilities

This week, MP moves from white wines into the much mo’ manly territory of red wine.  I start with Pinot Noir, used to make the lightest wines of the three traditional red wine grape varietals we’ll report on over the next few weeks.  And just in time for Thanksgiving, as Pinot Noir (“pinot” for short, not to  be confused with its less popular cousins like Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc) is one of the few red wines that’s not too overpowering for the turkey (or Tofurky) table.  Thought you had to bust out the big carving knife and attack the main course to be a stud on 11/27/14?  Thought you had to guzzle a dozen brewskis in front of the NFL’s triple header to be the BSD (“Big Swingin’ You-know-what”) this Thanksgiving?

Today’s post spotlights the second of six superstar grape varietals you need to know about to be a wine-worthy modern man.  Have you ever tried Riesling?  It’s not as widely planted or consumed in the U.S. as in Europe – Germany, France and Austria are three of the biggest producers.  But the pendulum is swinging, with increased cultivation in the U.S.  (Side Bar/Wine Bar – the Finger Lakes region in upstate New York also produces Riesling, especially those of the semi-sweet and sweet variety.)

MP's Wine Wednesday!...  If you want to be a true Rico Suave, you need to get up to speed on Sauvignon Blanc (“Sauv Blanc” for short).  It’s one of the world’s most popular white wine varietals, and has a storied history.  With strong Old World roots in France and more recent New World incarnations, Sauvignon Blanc is truly a worldwide wine.  Last but not least, it’s a wine that will allow you to suggest some great food pairing options, whether you’re at a fancy seafood restaurant or opening a bottle at home.  Below are the basics you need to know to be a well-informed man about town when it comes to Sauvignon Blanc….
