If you are like me, when you first hear the name “Davidoff”, you’d most likely do a double take and say “WTF”.  Or some of you classy gents might recognize the name as the infamous Swiss luxury tobacco goods brand.  Davidoff, my friends, is indeed the Swiss tobacco goods house founded by Henri Davidoff and family in early 20th century.  This article however is about a different kind of Davidoff, Davidoff Cool Water cologne.

What we have here lads is quite possibly the godfather of men’s perfume.  In the 1980s, the tobacco brand expanded into perfumes, leathers and accessories.  The very first fragrance introduced by the company was Davidoff for Men, in 1984.  However, what really put the Davidoff brand on the map was when the brand first introduced the Cool Water aquatic fragrance category in 1988.  This aroma has since been often imitated by numerous men’s fragrance (Read More).

Before we bore you with the history lessons, let’s take a look at this classic find.  Born from the brands masculine heritage of the tobacco lineage, the male focused essence can be detected from the rigid shape of the the glass bottle to the distinctive aroma emitting from the silver nozzle.  The cologne comes in a sleek, tall metallic blue glass bottle, giving off the crisp and clean look of the ocean.  The only two noticeable writings on the bottles are “Davidoff Cool Water” and “eau de toilette”, which directly translates to “toilet water”, or in this case referring to a diluted perfume or aromatic water.  By the way, ManPossible also has a “toilette” section - wink wink.  Some of the noticeable ingredients include: lavender, jasmine, oakmoss, musk and sandalwood.  As the name suggests, the happy marriage of all these mashup of distinctive scent produces a refreshing and reminiscing essence of the ocean.  The best way to describe the overall experience is (ironically) to relate it to the ocean wave.  Imagine staring out into the open sea as tidal after tidal of waves tumble over itself.  The initial aroma of Cool Water resembles that of the rising wave: strong and recognizable.  As one progresses throughout the day, the scent gradually retreats, leaving light traces of its presence.

As manly as we’d all like to be, this cologne isn’t meant for everyone; just like not everyone enjoys smoking tobacco.  In additional to all the aromatic scents of the ocean, you’d pick up a slight hint of spice.  The spicy after-scent does need some getting used to for both yourself and those around you.  After being exposed to the fragrance for couple times, it started growing on me and converted me into an advocate.  If you are new to Davidoff Cool Water, we suggest you check out your local department stores to try out a sample before purchasing in store or online.  If classic is the look (and smell) you want to pull off, then this cologne is a definite must try!
